Founded in 1889 as a small, New York City gum, mica pulp, paste and glue-sizing company to serve the needs primarily of wall paper, textile and envelope producers, National Gum & Mica was incorporated in 1895. National helped pioneer the use of starch-based, odor-free, cold curing “vegetable” adhesives for the burgeoning consumer packaging industries during the early decades of the 20th Century.
The company’s success during the economic boom of the Roaring ‘20s was based largely on a growing line of proprietary starch-based adhesives and a reputation for fast, innovative formulating solutions with industrial customers who needed clean, cold-curing adhesives for their increasingly fast and efficient mass production lines.
