What it is—
Thermally Modified Wood is produced by a technology new to the American wood industry that offers the best of all worlds. Wood is dried at high temperatures in specially designed kilns, using chemicals. The result is a viable alternative to pressure treated wood.
Characteristics—
Thermal modification makes wood harder and dimensionally stable. It repels water making it rot resistant, and because the kiln-drying process actually modifies the molecular structure of sugars in the wood, it won’t support insects, mold or fungus. The darker color penetrates throughout the piece, not just on the exposed surfaces.
The environment—
Thermally modified wood is 100% natural wood—completely free of chemicals—making it environmentally safe.
Species—
Any species can be thermally modified. Poplar, red oak, and ash are currently available at Keystone. Thermally modified wood can be ordered FSC certified (call for availability).
